A Week in Garden Photos – April 24-th 30th

This past week was lovely. More days than not we had sunshine with temperatures in the mid 50’s which is just the way I like it. Mostly because I can still go outside with a long sleeved shirt and coat on without overheating. 😉

The puggle princess and I planted Walla Walla sweet onion starts, transplanted cabbage to the raised garden beds, sprinkled Sluggo around, planted a row of carrots and picked a vase full of tulips for the kitchen table. It was a good week.

I popped by the garden center to take a look and they already had several racks of tomato plants out for sale. I usually don’t set out my tomato plants until around Mother’s Day so I passed. I’ll drag the HH to the Farmer’s market in a few weeks and see if I can find a few heirloom varieties to plant in the pots on the back porch. I’m going to limit myself to just 9 plants this year. 3 each in the galvanized tubs and 1 tomato plant in each of the big Costco pots near the backdoor. I’m also thinking about starting my cucumber and zucchini seeds in a few days. I like to set those out in the garden around the 3rd week in May.

Gardening season… it’s finally here! 🙂 🙂 🙂

Have a great week everyone,

~Mavis

It was a really good week for gardening, the chickens, Lucy and for me. Lot’s of sunshine with a few bouts of rain here and there but for the most part, the weather was pretty nice.

I planted potatoes, thinned the radishes, harvested a few stalks of rhubarb, dyed some wool and just enjoyed being outside in general. So much so that I didn’t even get in my car and drive anywhere all of last week. I honestly can’t remember a time {if ever} I have stayed home for an entire week. It. Was. Amazing.  You should try it. It’s funny, as I get older, not only do I need less, but there’s less I want to do.

Just being in the moment, and enjoying what’s around you. It’s magical.

Have a wonderful week everyone,

~Mavis

Lucy’s back in business. As a chicken mama that is. I figured since we still have a little time left on our sentence here in high maintenance suburbia, it was high time to have some fun. And anyways… life is too short to care about what other people think. Especially what goes on behind your own garden gates.

Spring. It’s here. The sunshine is back, and fresh veggies are around the corner. Who could ask for more?

Have a wonderful Easter sunday.

The puggle princess and I had a great time in the garden last week. The weather was a bit wonky, rain one minute, clouds or sunshine the next, but we were able to get a bunch of mini projects done nonetheless.

Lucy loves a good nature walk so one afternoon we went into the woods and collected sticks for the wool flowers I make and sell in my Etsy shop.

How are your raspberry canes doing? Ours are starting to come in nicely and are beginning to spread. I’m trying to decide if I should have the HH build another trellis or just pull up the extra shoots. On one hand it would be nice to have the extra berries, but I don’t think we’ll be here long enough to actually get any fruit from them. Hmmm.

Take a look at this shasta daisy plant. The first spring we were here {3 years ago!} I started a flat with seeds on the back patio. Towards the end of that first summer I divided the tiny seedlings and planted them along the fence line {near the garden beds} and out front near the garden gate. Now, just after a few years, they are all about a foot across. Isn’t that cool?

The fava beans are looking strong. I think they’ll make a nice backdrop in the garden beds until it’s time to plant zucchinis and cucumbers in late May.

The espalier pear trees are starting to wake up.

The kale I planted for The Girl is growing well too. I’ll keep the kale in the galvanized tubs until it’s time to set out the heirloom tomato plants in May.

The backyard, it’s starting to come alive again and I’m loving it. After such a long wet winter, I hope this means we’ll have a nice {and long} summer with lot’s of sunshine. 😉

Have a great week everyone,

~Mavis
