Hey everyone,

I’ll be bringing my weekly gardening adventures back to One Hundred Dollars a Month for now. I will still be updating Dig for Your Dinner with planting guides and other tidbits from time to time, just not full speed ahead like I was doing before.

I have a lot of irons in the fire right now and this switch will make things a little simpler for me, I hope you understand.

Keep calm and garden on,

~Mavis

Sunny skies are here again! After the third sunny day in a row I stopped counting, but let me tell you Bob, a girl could sure get used to SUNSHINE in May. πŸ˜‰ After a looooong and wet winter here in the Pacific Northwest I think we’ve finally turned a corner. Fingers crossed the weather holds and the tomato plants start growing like mad.

The Girl has taken over mowing for this year {a job previously held by Monkey Boy} and let’s just say she hasn’t quite gotten the hang of the weed eater {trimmer} yet. Her solution? Use scissors around the garden boxes. Which I think is pretty stinkin’ hilarious.

In other news… we found a free basket poking out of a dumpster and promptly rescued it. Which then made us unable to stop repeating “Awww… Who would throw away a perfectly good friend?” for the next 2 hours.

The fava beans are getting pretty tall…and most plants have thumbnail sized buds growing off the stalks… which can only mean one thing: bean pods are not far behind. πŸ™‚

The potato plants have broken through the soil as well as a few sunflowers and carrots.

Lucy and I harvested our first radish from the garden last night and are patiently waiting for the cucumber, pumpkins and zucchini to pop up out of the dirt {Lucy LOVES zucchini!}.

Life. It’s pretty rad right now… πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

Have a WONDERFUL week.

It was a wonderful week in the garden! Lots of sunshine and lounging around the backyard for Lucy the puggle princess. If there is one thing she loves to do this time of year it’s sun herself. πŸ˜‰

Our tomato and pepper plants arrive and so those were planted…

Along with basil and a few more dwarf sunflower seeds in the garden beds.

I also started my cucumber, zucchini and squash seeds in containers.

This year my pumpkin of choice is the Musquee de Provence. Isn’t she a beauty? Not only is the pumpkin pretty tasty but it has a hard shell so it’s great for display purposes as well.

So far in the garden beds I’ve planted onions, lettuce, radish, garlic, potatoes, sunflowers and fava beans.

I’ve never grown sunflowers mingled with potato seeds before but I’m hoping it looks cool {and attracts bees}. Only time will tell I guess.

Lucy and Sybil, they make such a good team. These two, they are practically joined at the hip… and it’s absolutely adorable.

Have a wonderful weekend everyone,

~Mavis

fresh herbs

I get a version of Kim’s question below often. If you share her question, read on for some info. If you have some great input, pretty please share away. Sometimes it takes a village!

Okay Mavis, I need your help. You garden and cook and I’m just starting to dabble in both. What are the herbs you grow in your garden that you use most often in your recipes {and preferably ones I won’t kill, so they have to be kinda easy to grow!}.

Thanks,

Kim from Oregon

herbs

The easiest way to answer her question is to take a tip from Simon and Garfunkel: parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme are super easy to grow and used all the time in my kitchen {sorry if you have that song in your head all day!}. I also love growing fresh oregano and basil in my herb garden. Here are some tips to help get you started:

My Favorite Herbs for Container Gardening

Growing Rosemary From Seed

Growing Parsley From Seed

Growing Thyme From Seed

Growing Basil From Seed

Best Herbs for Companion Planting

My Favorite Pesto Recipe

Freeze Fresh Herbs in Olive Oil

Good luck with your garden and your venture into cooking!

It was another lovely week here in the Pacific Northwest filled with sunny skies and warm temps hovering around 60+ degrees. There were two days it even hit 70. πŸ™‚ I stopped by the farmer’s market to look for heirloom tomato plants but the pickings were slim so I decided to wait another week in hopes that they’ll be more to choose from next time around.

Lately I’ve been spending my afternoons out on the back porch sitting in the sun and working on rug hooking projects …. it’s so nice to be able to do that again.

I planted 2 rows of sunflowers in one of the raised garden beds and plan to use those in cut flower bouquets. The strawberry, blueberry and raspberry plants are starting to fill out and it won’t be long now before little fruits start to appear. I’ll start zucchini, cucumber and squash seeds this week {indoors} and clear out the kale beds and get them ready for the tomato plants I hope to bring home next week.

Summer…. it’s on its way and I couldn’t be happier.
