A Week in Garden Photos – April 24-th 30th

This past week was lovely. More days than not we had sunshine with temperatures in the mid 50’s which is just the way I like it. Mostly because I can still go outside with a long sleeved shirt and coat on without overheating. ๐Ÿ˜‰

The puggle princess and I planted Walla Walla sweet onion starts, transplanted cabbage to the raised garden beds, sprinkled Sluggo around, planted a row of carrots and picked a vase full of tulips for the kitchen table. It was a good week.

I popped by the garden center to take a look and they already had several racks of tomato plants out for sale. I usually don’t set out my tomato plants until around Mother’s Day so I passed. I’ll drag the HH to the Farmer’s market in a few weeks and see if I can find a few heirloom varieties to plant in the pots on the back porch. I’m going to limit myself to just 9 plants this year. 3 each in the galvanized tubs and 1 tomato plant in each of the big Costco pots near the backdoor. I’m also thinking about starting my cucumber and zucchini seeds in a few days. I like to set those out in the garden around the 3rd week in May.

Gardening season… it’s finally here! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Have a great week everyone,

~Mavis

I have a 8×15 greenhouse to play with and this week grabbed the heirloom tomato plants at my nursery, (it’s not worth staring from seed when I need so few , )
I so want to stayed planting if it would just dry up a little outside , come on sunshine

I normally wait to plant summer squash, etc. until a bit later here, but it’s been unseasonably hot, so I went ahead and planted lemon squash, golden crispy melons, Clemson okra, and county fair cucumbers this weekend. I also planted ginger plants, which I’ve never grown before, but I’m super excited about them. We harvested our first strawberry yesterday, and I’m trying to harden off our 31 tomato seedlings so I can gift them to friends at the end of this week. It’s been so hot and sunny that I can only put them out a few minutes at a time. My peppers are still under lights since they’re a bit small, but I shudder to think how hot it’ll be by the time they’re ready to go out if it already hit 90 this week.

I have tried planting walla walla onion starts several times with no success. Root crops do not grow well in our raised bed gardens here in Snohomish county. Maybe we need nematodes?

Beautiful spring photos!! A real breath of fresh air!! Your tulips are gorgeous!
Our yard is looking scruffy and the season is winding down… I am ready to lounge by the fire and enjoy your garden over the next few months!

I haven’t tried this yet, but in a gardening book I have by Jerry Baker “Gardening Secrets”, he recommends 1 part ammonia to 2 parts cool tap water in a spray bottle to get rid of slugs….Just wanted to share!
