Last friday The Girl and I popped by the Puyallup Fair to take a look at the farm animals and prize winning vegetables. Early birds {that would be us!} enjoyed free admission from 10am-noon on opening day. We totally passed on visiting all the rides/games and exhibition halls. Because really, who wants to stand in line/waste money or walk down aisles packed with people selling hot tubs, blenders, vinyl siding and a gazillion other products we don’t need.
We were there for the animals. And oh my did we see some cute ones.
Spotted pigs.
I bet Lucy would love a pet goat.
The three amigos.
Beautiful ducks, turkeys, chickens, rabbits, cows, horses, and pigeons. Soooo many pigeons it was crazy. There weren’t as many chickens as years past, but there was still plenty of other animals to see.
And the antibacterial soap. Oh my word. I can’t tell you how many adults were telling their kids to get a few squirts of antibacterial soap on their way out of the barns just because they were in the SAME building a farm animal.
Were the kids touching the animals?
No.
They were just in the same building.
No one was actually petting an animal or anything… they were just walking by the animals. It was strange. Do these parents not let their kids play in the dirt? Or are they “indoor kids?” Maybe I’m the weird one. I don’t know.
Note to self: I must have this.
We LOVED the fruit and vegetable displays. We only wish there were more of them.
A 32.4 pound zucchini. Wowza.
Prize winning dahlias.
And scones. You can’t go the the fair and not get a scone {or 12}.
It was a fun way to spend the morning. I’m glad we went.
Do you have a local fair you like to attend every year? If so, do you splurge at any of the food trucks? Do tell.

I love shows (fairs)
Most towns/cities have a local show – usually a spring or autumn one.
I love looking at the garden entries too (and enter sometimes) and see the animals, show jumping, wood chopping and all that stuff!!
We have a ‘biggest pumpkin’ competition and its pretty great to see the monster pumpkins.
I can’t go past a steak sandwich at a country show! They are always super!
The fruit and vegie display above looks so amazing!
And no – its not just you. You don’t need to disinfect every five minutes! lol

I like to believe that my children don’t get sick because we play in the dirt and don’t believe in antibacterial soap or lotion.
Love all those animals!

I grew up on a farm so I’m not worried about “animal germs”. I don’t have children but if I did, they would have pets and have at least visited the family farm and I wouldn’t worry about them getting germs from animals. We used to go barefoot all summer and when we found a fresh cow pie, we would step in it and when it dried there was the imprint of our feet. LOL It didn’t kill my sisters or me.
I LOVE the fair displays. We have a small autumn fair not far from here that I go to. I have entered things and gotten cash prizes but no ribbons for what I entered.
I can’t pass the Pineapple Whip truck at the fair! It is like a pineapple sherbet. I’ve been eating those since my Daddy took us to the big Nashville fair growing up. It is all of my family’s favorite at the fair. We loved funnel cakes when they first came out with them but then my Mom started making them at home and hers were even better. I have to have one or two Pineapple Whips though when I go to the fair or carnival. And NO rides for me at all. I’m afraid of heights so I don’t get on those and I have Meniere’s Disease which causes some unsteadiness sometimes so I don’t need to be thrown around on a ride. I have a hard enough time staying upright as it is. LOL

Have you ever grown Indigo Rose tomatoes? So very, very bland. No acidity at all.

Scones at a fair? That’s a new one to me! Is that a common fair treat in the Pacific NW? Of course, we probably have boiled peanuts or some other food that might seem weird to you at ours! 🙂
I HATE antibacterial soap, but our 2012 fair here led to a pretty serious outbreak of e coli in which 104 people were infected, 13 people hospitalized, and a 2 year old was killed, so I understand making sure the kids wash their hands after being near the animals.
The veggie displays are amazing, and those piglets — I don’t know that I’ve seen anything cuter, ever!

Do they still say “Do the Puyallup”? My husband grew up in Puyallup and of course: scones! 😀 We have a friend who works the scone stand some years. I’ve never been to the fair though, we never timed our visit to attend.

They changed the name of the fair to The Washington State Fair. Ask your husband about Earthquake Burgers. 🙂

I cannot bring myself to call it anything other than the Puyallup Fair! Earthquake burgers and scones, oh my!!!

Favorite fair food…elephant ears!!! I wonder about the love of scones. They taste like light tender biscuits to me. As a kid whenever food was in short supply, Mom added biscuits and jam to the meal. So scones always remind me of “too much month and not enough paycheck”. But elephant ears AWESOME!
