Yesterday I woke up early and headed outside to finish planting the last of the summer vegetable seeds. This time around I planted 3 varieties of beans {baby lima, Cowpea and Tiger’s eye}. I like to plant green beans in the Washington garden {for fresh eating} and dried beans here on the east coast so I don’t have to worry about missing a harvest. Pretty clever, eh? ๐
I also planted a hill of Moon and Stars Watermelon, 2 hills of butternut squash, 2 hills of buttercup squash {makes the best pies!} and a hill of cantaloupe {because hey, why not?}.
First radish harvest!
The onions look amazing if I do say so myself.
Hay or straw? I couldn’t decide which one to mulch with so I’ve decided to do a little experiment this summer.
That is… just as soon as I get the rest of the garden weeded. ๐
Have a great weekend everyone,
~Mavis

For mulching, I would stay with straw. Hay always seems to have more seeds in it and produces more weeds. At least in my dealings with both. I use hay to give to my chickens for bedding or whatever. They love picking at all the goodies in there.

Don’t use hay!!! So many seeds, you’ll be pulling for years.
