Yesterday, Lucy the puggle princess and I popped outside for a few minutes to dig up the remaining potatoes from our raised garden beds. I was worried the potatoes had frozen and turned to mush during the cold weather snap last week but luckily, they were just fine.
Lucy puggle LOVES to dig. I’m not sure what she thinks is down there, but let me tell you Bob, she makes my job so much easier.
Look at the baby potato!!
Luckily, we were able to harvest enough potatoes for the beef pot pie I plan on making for tonight’s dinner.
Have you harvested anything from your garden lately? Do tell!

I picked some rosemary yesterday, and a couple of beets. I saw the rhubarb and chard was poking out new growth which made me happy. Garlic, onions, cauliflower and arugula that I planted in the fall are going strong! I took a note from you and left my meyer lemon outside, and it’s doing far better than it did last year when I brought it in, so woo!

What a good helper she is! Our little Rosie (pug/chihuahua/mystery mix who looks like a Tibetan spaniel) would try to eat those potatoes rather than dig them out.
I didn’t get it together to plant an outdoor winter garden, but I have mung bean, broccoli, and alfalfa sprouts growing in my sprouter on the kitchen counter and am going to plant some mesclun indoors tomorrow. I was thinking about trying radishes indoors. Have you done that successfully before?
Mavis says
I’ve never done indoor radishes. If you attempt it, keep us posted on how it turns out.

Lucy is adorable. I have a Jack Russell who is equally “motivated”.

Lucy is so very cute!! I love the pictures of her digging your potatoes!! Good looking potatoes, I might add!
I have quite the story for you on my attempts to dig my carrots and beets just before Christmas!! I live in the Portland Oregon area in the burbs. I was holding on to the few veggies I had left for Christmas dinner. I was so looking forward to the fresh carrots & beets!! Well we, like you, had a very wet, soaking November & December. I went out in my garden the day before to do some harvesting. I wore my garden shoes that are low without a back. Just for a quick trip!! As I began to get closer to my carrots I noticed a lot of standing water in the garden. I hesitated for a moment and then spotted my carrots. They were just right there a few steps ahead! I threw caution to the wind and continued on. As I stepped a few more feet, things began to go very wrong!! My feet began to sink about a foot into the mud!! My feet came out of my shoes and my legs began to separate even more! All different plans began running through my head on how to get out of my predicament. My legs kept spreading and I couldn’t move my feet!! One knee went down and then another. I was yelling for my husband, who was in the house, to help. He had the radio on loud and couldn’t hear me. Luckily I had my cell phone in my coat pocket and called him for help. Between the two of us , covered in mud, pulling each other across the garden ,we finally got out!! I never laughed so hard!! We pulled our shoes and socks and our pants off still laughing our heads of. I tried to grab a few carrots as I was being drug away by my husband , but they were just beyond my reach. If I hadn’t been laughing so hard I might of got a few for my dinner!!! Those carrots are gonna have to wait for spring!! I’m afraid to go out there again now! Oh my husband did dig out my shoes when we had the freezing weather. I was gonna wait till spring!!!! I’m not to sure about this winter gardening thing!!!

It has been warm and then really cold, but for New Years Day supper I had picked collard greens and cooked them. Tradition here in the South is for greens to represent receiving money in the new year, black eye peas for luck and some sort of pork because it is so good. I also picked lettuce for a salad before Christmas and some super good carrots. The carrots winter over good in Piedmont of North Carolina. I follow your other blog but love this one just for gardening. Thanks so much Mavis for all of your posts and advice. I get a lot from it and read it every day. I especially love how you feed your family for such a small amount. I am on a fixed income and also look for ways to eat for less. Happy New Year!

In E. WA we’ve been having freezing days & nights. I picked frozen kale and used it in stir fry and soup. I thought of it as shopping in Mother Nature’s freezer section.
