I think it might be just a little early, but I couldn’t wait any longer. Our tomatoes… have all been planted. With any luck, we should start harvesting around late July.

All the French breakfast radishes have been harvested and assorted lettuce mixes have been planted in their place.

The next round of seeds are ready to go as well. May 15th for beans, cucumbers and zucchini and June 1st for pumpkins, sunflowers and assorted squash.

Mavis I see you use those big silver troughs for planting each year. I was wondering if you empty out all of the dirt each season? If not how do you amend the soil in the tubs? If you do dump, where do you put all the used soil? I am fairly new to container gardening and would like to make sure I am giving my plant the best advantage I can each year.
    Thanks ~ Cyndi

I love the sticky notes with dates on them! I pile my packets up and then forget where and when I was going to plant them. I planted my tomatoes and peppers out 1-2 weeks ago.

    Hi Mavis,
We too planted our starts this sunny weekend. Is it to late in the year to plant corn seeds here in the NW?
I love all your posts about gardening. Keep it up!

    Cheers,
    Stacey

Corn is usually planted in early june in the PNW. I hope that helps.

Headed to the beach for a few days!
I’ve attempted to locate some of your favorites with no luck.
Any suggestions and what is the title of the book you are waiting for from the library?

Mavis, is the escarole planted with the tomatoes? I have never grown it before. I have little tomatoes all over my 21 tomato plants. I live in Alabama though and got to plant earlier and I took a risk and planted a little earlier than is normally suggested. I wanted to get a head start because it gets extremely hot and humid here.

I wish I could use the metal water troughs here but I tried one time and it gets too hot and it bakes the roots of the vegetables. I do raised beds and I mulch with organic matter and it helps to keep the plants from getting wilted. I have everything planted now and all I have to do is pull up plants as they die and replant something in their place. We have a long growing season but the heat is pretty hard on new plants. Okra does really well in the middle of the summer here but it takes a bit more room than I usually have but I still stick a plant or two in the raised beds and get enough to eat that way.

I am in NC and trying okra for the first time in my raised beds. I gave each plant a square foot of space (4 plants) – I’m worried they will be cramped but I’ve found it difficult to find other gardeners who grow it that I can ask.

Hmmm. I’ve never grown okra before Carrie. I’m sorry.

I would imagine it gets pretty warm in Alabama during the summer months. Yes! That is escarole planted around the base of the tomato plants. I love growing it in containers… the leaf pattern is gorgeous.

Still too cold in the UK 🙁

Winter never really happened (it just rained) and then April was freezing- literally. This is the first morning for about a week without a frost.
