UPDATE

This giveaway is now closed.

The winner is RebeccaW who said “The first thing I would start would be kale and cabbage to get a jump start on the spring cool season here in the Mid-Atlantic!”

**********************

You know what’s awesome about winter gardening in cold climates? Not much. The ground outside is frozen, the fresh harvests of the summer are over. Or are they? If you have a little space {on top of the washer/dryer anyone?} and an awesome grow light, winter gardening just got pretty exciting. There’s all sorts of new growth potential with a grow light. I’ve had my Hydrofarm Jump Start T5 Grow Light System for a few years and it’s completely changed the way I garden in the winter or start my seeds indoors.

grow-lights

Because I love my grow light so much, I think you should have one, too! So I’ve teamed up with the cool peeps at Hydrofarm.com to give one away. Wahoo! Now you have a chance to win your very own Hydrofarm Jump Start T5 Grow Light System.

Not that familiar with grow lights? Well they aren’t all created equal. Here’s what I love most about the T5:

  • It’s an awesome light system for starting seeds, propagating cuttings, and growing indoor flowers and houseplants
  • It’s feather-touch height-adjustment mechanism raises or lowers fixture easily
  • It has premium-quality ETL-listed fluorescent fixture with wide reflector provides maximum coverage and is energy efficient
  • The T5 has a high output grow light fixture and bulb with a 6′ grounded cord
  • The system measures approximately 50 x 18 x 31 inches and comes with a full 1-year warranty

seedlingsThe Jump Start T5 System is great starter system if you’re new to the world of indoor gardening. It’s awesome if you want to up your gardening game raise your own plants from seed, or even if you’re a seasoned vet looking for a replacement grow light. It’s the only grow light I use. I’ve tried other grow lights and my T5 is by far my favorite! So it’s what I use to start all my seeds indoors. And if you’re the lucky winner, it can be yours!

Hi Mavis. I would start all my peppers – bell, poblano, anaheim. I spend a fortune (and get frustrated trying to find) for seedlings because I don’t get enough light in my house in the place where I can keep seedlings safe from the marauding hordes (cats and dogs.)

The first thing I would do would be to get my peppers and tomatoes started. Grow lights are super helpful for gardeners where I live, in Minnesota, because our growing season is shorter than most people’s, and it’s a great way to get those plants hardy before planting them outside in the constant wind that batters most of the garden plants during the summer. I would love one!

It would be hard to choose what seeds to begin under the grow light, but since I have never had success with cucumbers or peas, they would be the likely candidates. Since I live in deep south Texas, the time from our last frost to severe heat is short. A grow light might really help to get those plants started early! Anyway, thanks for the give-away!

I would start Red Peppers. Here in the NE of the USA the growing season isn’t near long enough to get red peppers so I would need to start the seeds really early to get the plants HUGE by transplant time.

I follow your blog already. LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!!!! (p.s. Still working on scarves for the flock….gotta get them in the mail)

I have started my little seedlings with natural light but I think my Tomatoes darkings need a little extra help from a higher power. Lol
Every year I plant and most years I get big “Jack and the Beanstalk” size plants but no tomatoes. But, I’m not a quitter (and I love fresh tomatoes) so I keep trying.
Thank you for ALL the wonderful advice on both blogs!!!

    Hi Mavis!

If I won the Hydrofarm Jump Start T5 System, the first thing you would start to grow would be a collection of beneficial insect and bee attracting plants. I want to start beekeeping and would love to spice up my landscape with all the things they love and also bring in the ‘good’ bugs to naturally chase away the ‘bad’ bugs as well as help pollinate the various edible plants and trees we have. This is an exciting opportunity! 😀

    Thanks!

Last year I had 15 squash that overtook my garden and I couldn’t even find my pepper plants. This year I’ll be more careful about what I set out for choices! I also subscribed to your daily feed. #1.) The first thing I would grow are my cherry tomatoes that I received from my Seeds of the Month club! Especially after your helpful guide! T5 System, what would be the first thing you would start to grow? Leave a comment below letting me know your answer.

2.) I follow you on all your social media! I like Pinterest for the recipes (that soon I’ll be growing the ingredients for!), the FB for any posts I might have missed and your Instagram for the pictures. (That seem pretty professional! My photos all just look sad and blurry. lol)

3.) I emailed my mother about this since she responds better to that than on her social media that she neglects. Plus she’s a great gardener!

4.) I technically already commented on the actual article, but I loved the how to grow plants from seeds post so much I commented on the FB post too. Please keep writing more like that!

#5.)I’ve already been subscribed to your email list but I’d do it again if I could cause I really enjoy seeing how successful your garden is and how mine might hopefully get that way! (As it is currently blizzarding here in MN, I’m dreaming of my garden!)

This year I plan to expand my gardening efforts so I can can/preserve more and reduce my grocery bills… Since my small suburban backyard is mostly hillside, my gardening is limited to two small raised beds, containers and hanging pots. I’ve started shopping for beautiful edibles to add to my containers and flower beds. If I won the grow light system, I’d get started planting artichokes, a gorgeous peacock kale/broccoli, and starting cucamelons that I’ll transplant to hanging pots and (hopefully) pickle this summer!

Lemon cucumbers. Those two words are magic. It’s an heirloom variety we only got to know when we were in upstate New York and the Hudson Valley Seed Library had little packets. We fed almost all our neighbors and carried many with us on vacation and made new friends while making salads of this unusual cucumber!

I would start lettuce as I have been without fresh greens since September. Winters here in NH are not like in WA.

( more like LOVED) every site and blog available! If I “like” anymore you will be calling me stalker. Lol
Seriously, you are very encouraging (that’s where the grow light would come in handy) and funny. Keep up the hard work. It’s ALL WONDERFUL!!!!!!!

The first thing I would plant would be tomatoes, kale, and chokeberries. What a great give-away!

I would immediately grow spinach. Winter spinach salads are so good with fresh spinach.

I’m ready to start tomatoes, peppers, and cole crops. Everything else either gets direct seeded or started later (cukes, pumpkins, etc…) I usually start seeds under HID, Metal Halide which produces a fair amount of UV which lessens damage when hardening off. But this set up would be a great start on my aquaponics set up. Also, subscribed and did the whole FB thing…
