Lucy and I were outside yesterday when I decided it was good to clear the raised garden beds and get them ready for spring. I was going to try and get my Tagro {compost} for free this year by stopping by the center and filling up my bins, but now I’m thinking about having 5 yards delivered instead.
I hate to spend the money on Tagro when I can get it for free but I’m not in that part of town to often and I’d like to build up 3 different sections of the garden, so we’ll see.
The Brussels sprouts I planted last fall were looking a bit beat up so I decided to pull them.
I didn’t stay on top of the slugs this winter and the slimy critters took over. ๐
The garden beds are looking really good though. Lot’s of worms!
Roasted beets are on the menu for tonight.
A nice little harvest for mid-February, don’t you think?
Now comes the fun part… mapping out my garden for 2016.
Keep calm and garden on,

Do you eat the tops of the beets and carrots? Besides compost, what could they be used for?
Mavis Butterfield says
Lot’s of people eat sauteed beet greens but I don’t. ๐ I suppose if I wanted to I could toss the carrot tops in my soup stock or make pesto with them.
Alison says
Save them for Mrs. Hillbilly’s chickens – they will love them!!!
Mavis Butterfield says
Good idea Alison!

When I am drinking smoothies for breakfast (which I am not doing now) I add beet greens to the smoothie. They are chock full of vitamins & minerals ๐

When you pulled your carrots did you have any tiny worms on them? I pulled some of my beets last week and found tiny white worms on some of my beets.
Mavis Butterfield says
Nope. So far so good. Sorry to hear about your beets. ๐

What a wonderful garden jail for February !! You are amazing!! I just pulled the last of my carrots and the few beets I had left. Some of my carrots have little holes in them from probably some kind of worm. I just cut that part off and stick them in my soup pot!!
Pat says
HAUL not jail!! Grr

Have the Tagro delivered! That’s half a dump truck load! I know because I once had 10 yards of bark dust delivered! You would have to make 3 or 4 trips with a pickup truck and think of the gas cost, even with lower prices! Sometimes it’s just worth it to pay for someone else to do the work. And you will still have to move it to the beds and work it in!
Love that you have beets and carrots in February!

There’s something exciting about looking at an empty garden bed and thinking about all the possibilities. ๐
What is it you left growing in the middle of the one bed?
Mavis Butterfield says
Turnips! ๐

Don’t you feel like a very accomplished gardener when you have produce in Jan. and Feb? Anyone can grow tomatoes in the summer…but food in Feb is brag worthy!
